Did you know .....

Did you know?

  • 90% of women will experience some kind of tear as a result of their first birth experience.
  • Whilst many of these tears or episiotomies heal well and cause no future concern, for lots of women this is not the case.
  • Physical symptoms relating to tears include phantom pain, nerve damage pain, unrepaired tears and incontinence.
  • Additionally 1 in 2 women will experience a prolapse after childbirth and some women experience both problems with tears and with prolapse.
  • Most women will experience devastating issues with their emotional and mental health as a result of birth injury.
  • Not only is this common problem with birth injury a cultural taboo but also accessing appropriate treatment can also be an ongoing, traumatic battle too.

As well as the unfolding trauma of living with a prolapse or functional issues with tears women can also experience:

  • A loss of self-esteem and dignity
  • A loss of trust and confidence in their body
  • Self-blame and shame about their injury
  • A feeling of hopelessness about future health
  • Anxiety about future health worsening
  • A negative impact on intimacy and relationships
  • A disconnection from their body

This heavy emotional toll can leave parents vulnerable to mental illnesses such as addictions, OCD, depression and anxiety disorders.

However, there is plenty that we, as perinatal specialists, can do to support parents impacted by birth injury.

 We can:

  • Educate parents antenatally about tears and prolapses so they are better able to avoid likelihood of these injuries during birth but also, they know what to expect, how to treat and how to recover if they do experience an injury.
  • Support parents to seek the right treatment path (this is often a battle sadly).
  • Support parents’ motivation with pelvic floor exercises and healthy lifestyle choices by using relaxation, conditioning and visualisation exercises.
  • Support parents to reconnect with their bodies in a positive, forgiving and loving way that supports healing and recovery.
  • Provide a safe space to talk about pelvic floor function, health and sex.
  • Take birth injury out of the shadows and break the taboo that keeps women silenced, suffering and alone with their injury.
